The Legal Requirement

WA Hotels with Pools Have Mandatory Training Obligations

Under the WA Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007, hotels, resorts, mining camps, and health clubs with swimming pools are classified as Group 3 aquatic facilities. This means at least one staff member on duty must hold a current Group 3 Aquatic Rescue qualification โ€” not just standard first aid.

This obligation applies whether your pool is indoors or outdoors, heated or unheated, and regardless of pool depth or size. Non-compliance can result in significant penalties and liability exposure in the event of an incident.

WCWS delivers the mandatory Group 3 training at your hotel or resort with no disruption to operations. We also provide casual lifeguard cover when you need an extra set of experienced eyes on your pool.

๐Ÿ’ฐ What non-compliance costs

An unqualified response to a pool emergency can expose your property to criminal liability, civil claims, and regulatory action. The cost of Group 3 training for your team is a fraction of the cost of a single preventable incident. WCWS has delivered this training to hotels and resorts across WA for over 10 years.

Common Questions

Hotel Pool Safety FAQ

Does our hotel pool need Group 3 trained staff?
Yes โ€” under WA Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007, hotels with swimming pools are Group 3 aquatic facilities requiring at least one staff member with current Group 3 Aquatic Rescue qualification to be on duty whenever the pool is open. Standard first aid certificates do not satisfy this requirement.
Can WCWS deliver training at our hotel without disrupting operations?
Yes โ€” all training is delivered at your pool at a time that minimises operational disruption. The Group 3 course takes approximately 3 hours and can be scheduled early morning, during low occupancy periods, or in smaller groups across multiple sessions.
Do you provide lifeguards for Broome resorts and hotels?
Yes โ€” WCWS provides lifeguard hire for Broome hotels, resorts, and holiday parks with no minimum contract. Based in Broome, we can provide rapid response cover without the fly-in travel costs charged by Perth-based providers.
What happens if we don't have Group 3 trained staff?
Operating a Group 3 pool facility without appropriately qualified staff is a regulatory breach. In the event of an incident, non-compliance with the Regulations can significantly increase your civil and criminal liability. WCWS recommends ensuring all pool-duty staff are Group 3 certified before your next busy season.
