The Legal Requirement

WA Hydrotherapy Pools Have Specific Obligations

Under the WA Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007, Group 3 aquatic facilities — which includes hydrotherapy pools, spa pools, and therapy pools — require staff trained in aquatic rescue specific to that environment. Standard pool lifeguard qualifications do not satisfy this requirement.

Hydrotherapy pools present unique challenges that differ from standard pools: patients with complex physical needs, assisted entry and egress, higher water temperatures, and patient-to-staff ratios that complicate standard rescue protocols. Training must specifically address these environments.

WCWS delivers two specific courses for hydrotherapy and therapy pool environments — both WA Health Department compliant, delivered at your facility.

⚠️ Standard Pool Lifeguard is NOT sufficient

A standard pool lifeguard certificate does not satisfy WA Health Dept requirements for Group 3 hydrotherapy pool facilities. Your staff must hold a specific Aquatic Rescue qualification that covers hydrotherapy environments, patient extraction, and managing clients with complex needs.

Common Questions

Hydrotherapy Pool Safety FAQ

Does our hydrotherapy pool need a specific aquatic rescue qualification?
Yes. Under WA Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007, Group 3 facilities including hydrotherapy pools require staff to hold a specific aquatic rescue qualification covering that environment. Standard first aid or pool lifeguard certificates alone are insufficient. WCWS delivers the specific WA Health Dept compliant training required.
Can WCWS come to our physiotherapy clinic to deliver training?
Yes — all training is delivered at your facility. We come to your hydrotherapy pool or clinic with all required equipment. We can deliver to clinics across Perth metro and in Broome. Contact us for a quote based on your location and participant numbers.
How many participants are needed for on-site training?
Our standard group courses are priced for up to 10 participants, with additional participants charged per head. We can accommodate smaller groups — contact us to discuss your specific situation. For very small clinics, we may be able to combine your session with another nearby facility.
How often does hydrotherapy pool rescue training need to be renewed?
Both the Hydrotherapy Rescue and Group 3 courses require renewal every 3 years. However we recommend an annual refresher — particularly for CPR — to maintain genuine competency. WCWS can schedule annual refresher visits for your team.
