This aquatic rescue SISCAQU002 – Perform basic water rescues course is specifically designed to provide the participant with the skills and knowledge to respond to a call for help quickly enough to minimize the chance of a person suffering long-term damage as a result of an aquatic incident or accident. Participants will learn how to perform basic water rescues.

This Rescue Award has no industry-recommended renewal period, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods. West Coast Water Safety recommends this qualification be reassessed annually.

The recommended annual refresher for all staff should also include the annual re-qualification of your:

  • HLTAID009 Provide CPR award (+$64).
  • HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation ($159 per person annually)

Entry Requirements:

  • Reasonable level (AQF level 3) of spoken and written English (link to LLN assessment)
  • Participants must have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to successfully complete the course
  • Work Placement Requirements: Nil
  • Minimum Age Requirements: Nil although the participant must be able to interact in an adult learning environment
  • Certification: Aquatic Rescue for Group 3 Award

Course content includes:

  • Theory on aquatic environments, water safety, and rescue techniques.
  • CPR on Adult and baby (2 mins on QCPR real-time feedback manikins)

    • identify, evaluate and respond to aquatic emergencies according to organisational and legislative requirements
    • identify and respond to all of the following signs and signals:
    1. call for help
    2. vertical body position
    3. minimal or non-supportive leg action
    4. vigorous arm movements
    5. submerged or unconscious person
    • perform the following non-swimming rescues:
    1. reach
    2. rope throw
    3. throw flotation aid
    • perform the following swimming rescues demonstrating the fitness and strength to tow a person in difficulty at least 10 metres with their mouth and nose above water to a point of safety:
    1. accompanied
    2. wade
    3. non-contact tow
    4. contact tow

Support services: A reasonable level of spoken and written English is required to complete this course. Reasonable adjustments can be made to certain aspects of the course without affecting the outcomes required.
