Whether you’re planning a career in aquatic safety, working as a swim instructor, or simply spending a lot of time near water, learning how to respond in emergencies is essential. Strong water safety skills build confidence and can mean the difference between life and death.

In 2022–23, 281 people in Australia tragically lost their lives due to drowning, according to a report by Drowning Prevention. This sobering figure underscores the need for structured training in rescue techniques and emergency response.

The Bronze Medallion course offers exactly that, more than a certification, it lays the groundwork for becoming a capable lifeguard or underwater safety professional.

Understanding the Bronze Medallion Program

Bronze Medallion course is a nationally recognised program developed by Royal Life Saving Australia that helps teach participants the skills needed to respond in emergencies and save lives. Participants are given practical as well as theoretical knowledge to understand the emergencies that can arise, covering concepts like:

  • Water safety knowledge
  • Survival techniques
  • Basic emergency care
  • Supervised swimming rescues
  • Judgment and risk assessment

Who Must Enrol in The Course?

Anyone who has a passion for saving lives or loves to be near water must enrol in the course:

  • Teenagers who are at least 14 years of age and are looking to excel, build water safety skills, or volunteer in surf or pool environments
  • Teachers or sports coaches who supervise water-based activities
  • Swimmers, surf club members, and fitness enthusiasts who spend regular time near water
  • Parents or caregivers who want added confidence around pools and beaches
  • Aspiring lifeguards and swim instructors as a stepping stone to paid roles

Benefits of Earning a Bronze Medallion

Completing the Bronze Medallion course offers both personal and professional advantages:

So, what is the Bronze Medallion really about? It’s about preparedness. If you’re 14 or older, confident in the water, and ready to learn, this could be your first step toward a nationally recognised qualification that opens doors, on the beach, by the pool, and beyond.
